Lucas Corthum

Lucas Corthum (born April 29, 1688 in Sülfeld , † January 9, 1765 in Hamburg ) was a German lawyer , councilor and mayor of Hamburg.

Origin and family

Corthum was born as the son of the archdeacon at the main church Sankt Nikolai in Hamburg, Justus Corthum (1653–1724), in Sülfeld in Holstein, where his father was a preacher at the time. His mother Anna Elisabeth Lütkens (1661–1700) was the daughter of the Hamburg merchant Lucas Lütkens.

The preacher at Sankt Nicolai in Altengamme , Justus Corthum (1684–1731), was his older brother.

On May 24, 1728, Corthum married in the main church of St. Nikolai with the merchant's daughter Johanna Catharina Greve (1704–1766). The marriage remained childless.

Live and act

Born in Sülfeld, Corthum came to Hamburg with his parents in 1695, as his father had become a preacher at the main church of Sankt Nikolai. Here he attended the Johanneum School of Academics and, from 1702, the Academic Gymnasium . In 1709 he went to study law at the University of Leipzig . The brothers Gottfried and Johann Friedrich Olearius were among his teachers here. From 1712 he attended the University of Leiden and studied with Philipp Reinhard Vitriarius and Gerhard Noodt, among others . Finally he went to the University of Wittenberg , where he completed his studies on October 4, 1715 with a doctorate under Johannes Balthasar Wernher as a licentiate in law.

After completing his studies, Corthum returned to Hamburg and settled here as a lawyer . In 1721 he became a judge at the lower court and the following year also chairman of the lower court. On July 2, 1729 he was elected councilor. As such, he administered several offices. So he was Düpeherr , praetor , building yard lord when the Academic Gymnasium was rebuilt in 1744, Zehnpfennigherr, Weddeherr , forest lord , mill lord , land lord and visitor of the Bergedorf office . In addition, as councilor, he supervised the city ​​fortifications , admiralty , treasury and stock exchange .

On August 3, 1751 he was elected mayor for the late Lucas von Spreckelsen (1691–1751). He administered this office until his death in 1765. His successor was Vincent Rumpff (1701–1781).

A mayor's penny was minted on Corthum's death in 1765 .
