Justus Corthum (clergyman, 1684)

Justus Corthum (born May 28, 1684 in Sülfeld , † March 27, 1731 in Altengamme ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman .

Origin and family

Corthum was born as the son of the archdeacon of the same name at the main church Sankt Nikolai in Hamburg, Justus Corthum (1653–1724), in Sülfeld in Holstein, where his father was a preacher at the time. His mother Anna Elisabeth Lütkens (1661–1700) was the daughter of the Hamburg merchant Lucas Lütkens.

The Hamburg mayor, Lucas Corthum (1688–1765), was his younger brother.

Of his children from his marriage to Maria Krochmann (1688–1748), the son Justus Johannes (1719–1738) was a co-founder of the Society for the Admission of the German Language and the Liberal Arts , but died as a high school student and their daughter Anna Maria (1721–1738) 1742) married Bergedorf's mayor Gerhard Binder (1706–1768 ) in 1741 , but died shortly afterwards of the leaves .

Life

Born in Sülfeld, Corthum came to Hamburg with his parents in 1695, as his father had become a preacher at the main church of Sankt Nikolai. He attended the learned school of the Johanneum here and, after finishing school, enrolled on October 20, 1703 to study theology at the University of Helmstedt . In 1707 he moved to the University of Leipzig and in 1708 wrote a dissertation with Gottfried Olearius .

After completing his studies, Corthum returned to Hamburg in 1710 and was accepted as a candidate for the Hamburg Ministry on May 8, 1711 . On June 3, 1716, he was elected preacher to Sankt Nicolai in Altengamme , and on July 26, 1716, he was introduced to his office by senior Peter Theodor Seelmann . He held this office until his death in 1731.
