List of savings banks in Austria

The Sparkasse Voitsberg-Köflach Bank AG is a Styrian banking company based in Voitsberg and part of the savings bank group in Austria . It was created in 1868 as a community savings bank. The Sparkasse is a member of the cooperation and liability association of the Austrian savings banks and the Austrian savings bank association .

Founding history

The place experienced an economic boom in 1860 with the construction of the railway line. In mid-March 1862, the Voitsberg municipal council made a fundamental decision to found a savings bank, but the plans were postponed because of the Danish and, above all, the Austro-Prussian war. The founding resolution of the municipal council was only passed on January 29, 1867, after which a preparatory committee was set up.

On March 16, 1867, the municipal council passed the statutes, and on February 5, 1868, the municipality issued a guarantee certificate or a deposit of 5,000  fl . The Imperial and Royal Lieutenancy in Graz confirmed the statutes on September 25, 1868 with decree No. 11.850. A few days later, on October 5, 1868, Graz approved the rules of procedure with decree No. 12.601.

After the municipal council of Voitsberg had elected the first savings bank committee on October 18, 1868, the first and constituent meeting of the savings bank committee took place on October 19, 1868 with the election of the chairman and the members of the management. One day later, the Sparkasse management was constituted. With the opening of the counter in the parish hall, Kirchengasse 1–3 in Voitsberg, the Sparkasse began operations on November 14, 1868.

Structural development of the main institute

Since it was founded, the Sparkasse was housed "poorly" in the house of the merchant Siegmund Uray. In 1884 she was able to acquire this house, remodel it and move in together with the community chancellery and the district administration. In 1903/04 an extension followed and from 1934 to 1937 the entire complex was rebuilt, with the entrance to Bismarckstraße (today Michaeliplatz) being relocated and an increase made. In 1959/60 the main facility was rebuilt again, the counter hall was enlarged and 610 m² of new rooms were gained. The last major construction work took place in 1981 when the facade was renewed and the interior, especially the cash desk, was modernized. In 2004 the building at Bahnhofstrasse 2 was given a new postal address.

Important events

Daily cash desk opening hours were introduced for the first time in 1901, previously there were cash desk hours only on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. In 1908 the first money box that could only be opened in the savings bank was issued. In 1938 the Sparkasse opened its first branch in Köflach. Ten years later, the municipality of Köflach became a community of liability. The internal ratio Voitsberg: Köflach was initially 60:40 and was changed in 1967 to an equal 50:50. As chairwoman of the administrative committee, later the savings bank council, there was an annual change between the mayors of Voitsberg and Köflach. With the opening of the Köflach branch, the name was changed from “Sparkasse der Stadt Voitsberg” to “Sparkasse Voitsberg-Köflach”. In 1960 the first savings associations were founded and kindergarten and school savings were introduced. Eight years later, in 1968, the Sparkasse celebrated its 100th anniversary. Shortly before the next anniversary, the 125th anniversary, in 1992 the operational savings bank was transformed into a stock corporation. In 2003 the share management savings bank was converted into a private foundation.

Non-profit projects / sponsoring

In 1891 and 1893, the Sparkasse took over the construction costs of the girls' school building in Voitsberg in two stages and five years later those of the courthouse in Voitsberg. In the years before the First World War, among other things, the construction costs for the Voitsberg city supply house and the purchase of part of the former Carmelite monastery for the purpose of housing the elementary and state citizens' school, including the establishment of the chemical laboratory. The municipal poor fund Voitsberg was also supported and the Sparkasse assumed the planning costs for the railway line Voitsberg-Knittelfeld. Since 1918, the main focus of funding has been sport and culture, as well as road alignment in the Voitsberg district, school extensions, funding of volunteer fire brigades and rescue departments.
