Spacing

Example of different spacing

Spationing is the typographic term used to define the horizontal character spacing, letter spacing, word spacing and special spacing.

When creating text on the computer, an important question is the relationship between spacing and separation. Separators define the beginnings and ends of words. It is - especially in the blocking phrase or with ellipses - desirable to be able to handle spacing and separation separately.

The choice of line spacing and spacing are decisive for the artistic quality of a typography and for the legibility of the text created with it. Legibility depends heavily on the gray value (black and white proportion) of the font and the print. The questions are different for work on the screen. Because of the variety of screen qualities and sizes, it is important for e-books to be able to change these parameters by the user. A screen with as good a resolution as possible is important for small font sizes.
