Spec Ops is the name of a series of military simulations for PC and various game consoles. It was originally developed by Zombie Studios and published primarily for Windows and PlayStation consoles. After the first series titles for PC, the development went to the American studio Runecraft Ltd , which developed the series for the PlayStation. While the games were originally published by Ripcord Games , the series rights are now owned by the US publisher Take-Two Interactive . More developers came on board under Take 2.

The Spec Ops series was designed as a realistic first / third person shooter that involves the player in team operations. The first two games were rated well. The sequels under Take 2 between 2000 and 2002, however, were cheaply produced works, most recently published on Take 2's budget label Gotham Games, and received lower ratings. After ten years without further publication, Take 2 released Spec Ops: The Line in June 2012 , which was developed by the German developer studio Yager Development . It shifted the focus to the narrative and is influenced by the imperialism-critical novel Heart of Darkness and its adaptation, the anti-war film Apocalypse Now .
