The Sphinx Rock is a cliff rock in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . It is located just before the southwest end of Monroe Island and marks the west side of the entrance to Sandefjord Bay .
Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations discovered it in 1933 and named it after its shape, which is reminiscent of an Egyptian sphinx .
