Under Player counseling is understood in Germany the service of support and advice from professional players or aspiring professional footballers. From a legal point of view, a distinction must be made between player advisors and players' agents.

According to the DFB players' agent regulations, an agent is "... any natural or legal person who represents players and / or clubs in negotiations with a view to concluding a professional player contract or clubs in negotiations with regard to the conclusion of a transfer agreement for a fee or free of charge." According to the FIFA regulations for the status and transfer of players, a professional player is a "player who has a written contract with a club and receives more money for his footballing activity than is actually necessary to cover his expenses."

In comparison, players' agents mainly and recurrently take care of the placement of players to clubs and the associated contract negotiations.
