The playhouse in Hanau was the oldest town hall in the city, the predecessor of the old town hall opposite . It was completely destroyed in World War II.

history

The corner house at Metzgerstrasse / Altstädter Markt (address Altstädter Markt 1–3 ) was the city's first town hall. A year on the keystone of the vaulted cellar dated it to the year 1483. Due to the cantilevered upper floor, a striking bay window in the council chamber gave a visual connection to the two city gates of the city fortifications of the old town of Hanau, in the west the Metzgertor , in the south the Kinzdorfer Tor (also known as Kinzdorfer Tor ) ). Originally the house had a high gable and other pointed turrets. The ground floor of the playhouse was originally designed as an open hall. Only later, with the loss of its function as town hall, was it walled up. The playhouse soon became too small, so that as early as 1538, a larger town hall was built opposite today's goldsmith's house. The playhouse was then used to store municipal equipment. From 1656 it was rented to private individuals and sold in 1689.

Since the beginning of the 19th century there has been a flour shop in the house, from 1870 the grocer Gustav Gerlach & successor Wilhelm Eckel . In 1939 it was bought back by the city of Hanau. The building was completely destroyed during the air raid on Hanau on March 19, 1945 . A sandstone relief with a mysterious double face, originally in the filling of the bay window, was recovered from the rubble. With a common forehead and eye area, there is a beardless, youthful chin and mouth area on the left, and an older face with a beard on the right. The interpretation is uncertain.

The current building is a new building from the 1950s, which architecturally alludes to its historical predecessor. On the east side there is a cartouche with a reference to the history of the building. Today there is a restaurant on the ground floor with arcades.
