Playtime (sport)

In sport, playing time is the regular duration of a competition. It is, for example

• in football 2 × 45 minutes (less for juniors)
• in handball 2 × 30 minutes
• in ice hockey 3 × 20 minutes.

Whether interruptions are included in the playing time depends on the sport. Rule violations in the course of time can also be punished as penalty points in seconds or minutes.

Occasionally, the term playing time is also used to denote an entire playing season.
