A toy transformer is a safety transformer which is intended for the power supply of toys or all other systems that do not meet the installation regulations for low-voltage systems (see electrical installation ). If necessary, a rectifier is also installed in a bridge circuit .

Toy transformers may be manufactured for a maximum power of 200 VA and a maximum output voltage of AC 24 V or DC 33 V. Furthermore, the maximum permissible output current must not exceed 10 A. The output voltage depends on the manufacturer and is usually 12 V DC , or 16 V AC for Märklin products .

Toy transformers are available with a fixed output voltage for lighting and solenoid items or an adjustable output voltage for speed-controlled motors. The adjustability is achieved in simple designs by a sliding contact on the secondary winding of the transformer, or by an adjustable electronic voltage control .

The short-circuit resistance is ensured for small powers (e.g. 15 VA) by the choice of the air gap (as with the bell transformer ), for larger ones by temperature monitoring in the device.
