Coryphantha pycnacantha is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet pycnacantha means '(Greek pyknos dense) with dense spines'.

description

Coryphantha pycnacantha grows individually or forms groups with spherical to short cylindrical, blue-green to cloudy green shoots that reach heights of 5 to 9 centimeters with a diameter of 5 to 7 centimeters. The conical, up to 2.5 centimeters long warts are rhomboid at their base. There are 2 to 4 slightly curved, needle-like, white or yellow central spines that have a darker tip and turn gray with age. They are 1.3 to 1.9 inches long. The 8 to 15 slightly curved, 8 to 18 millimeter long radial spines are whitish to yellow and gray with age.

The bell-shaped flowers are light yellow. They are up to 4 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 5 centimeters. The elongated, green, juicy fruits are up to 2.4 centimeters long and 1.3 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Coryphantha pycnacantha is common on lava soils and grasslands in the Mexican states of México , Hidalgo , Puebla and Veracruz .

The first description as Mammillaria pycnacantha was published in 1832 by Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius . Charles Lemaire placed them in the genus Coryphantha in 1868 .

Coryphantha pycnacantha is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. endangered, classified.
