Spindle oil

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spindle oil is a low-viscosity lubricant or a component of lubricant mixtures. In some cases it is also added to heating oils .

When machines or gears are running, the sliding parts must be oiled and lubricated. Depending on the type and speed of movement, the viscosity of such oils and fats is important. The finer these movements, the more easily the oils used must be. Spindle oils are such low-viscosity lubricating oils.

Origin of name

The term denotes the original use in the textile industry ; the spindle with which the raw yarn was processed was oiled with spindle oil .

Extraction

After low-boiling fractions have been separated off during the atmospheric rectification of crude oil - among other things for the production of fuels such as petrol and diesel fuel - the residue (sump) is subjected to vacuum distillation in which the spindle oil is obtained as a fraction.
