SPINNBODEN - Lesbian Archive and Library , often just called " the Spinnboden " for short , is a special library based in Berlin and an archive on lesbian topics. The association goes back to a project of the women's group of Homosexual Action Westberlin (HAW), which was started in 1973 and was initially called " Lesbian Archives " , which was officially registered in 1983 under the name " SPINNBODEN - Archive for the discovery and preservation of women's love. " Association flowed. A change to the association's statutes in 2002 gave the association its current name.

According to its own information, Spinnboden maintains the largest European collection of testimonies and traces of a lesbian existence. In addition to the operation of the archive, library and documentation center, the Spinnboden - Lesbenarchiv & Bibliothek eV association sees itself . also as a meeting place for lesbians and regularly invites you to readings, film screenings, discussions and workshops.

origin of the name

The name Spinnboden comes from the celebrations organized by women in the village spinning rooms , which have been the focus of police attention since the 16th century because of alleged sexual debauchery.

Focus

The focus of the collection is fundamental and rare on the culture of friends of the twenties as well as the documents of the women's group of Homosexual Action Westberlin (HAW), which in 1975 called itself the Lesbian Action Center Westberlin (LAZ) . Spinnboden thus documents the history of a key player in the German lesbian movement . In addition, there are documents on feminist theory formation, private collections of papers and memorabilia of all kinds, as well as academic theses. Around 16,500 individual materials on the relevant subject areas are currently systematically recorded and most of them can already be researched using an online catalog. The documents are available as a book, magazine, image or sound carrier, poster or calendar.

The contact and information point for lesbians in Spinnboden offers lectures, films, various courses and workshops as well as advice, for example in the area of coming-out or individual coaching for lesbians in situations of professional change and unemployment.
