Spiral groove cutter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The spiral groove is used to clean grooves or recesses in timber by means of a router to milling . One specialty of the spiral groove cutter is plunge milling. This makes it possible, without pre-drilling, to plunge directly into the workpiece with the milling cutter and start the milling process. In the case of spiral groove cutters, a distinction must be made between the cutter with a right-hand twist and the one with a left-hand twist.

Right-hand spiral groove cutter

The spiral groove cutter has a right-facing spiral. Advantage: This milling cutter is particularly suitable for making quick grooves and recesses, as the right-hand twist of the milling cutter immediately lifts the chips and removes them from the milling area. Disadvantage: Due to the right-hand twist, the wood at the upper edge of the groove or recess can tear.

Spiral groove cutter with left hand twist

The spiral groove cutter has a left-facing spiral. Advantage: The milling cutter with a left-hand twist is particularly suitable for milling a clean upper edge of the groove. Disadvantage: Due to the left-hand twist, the milled chips are not transported upwards and thus out of the milling area, but are pressed down into the milled groove. As a result, only very slow milling is possible and, especially when working freehand, care must be taken to ensure a firm grip on the router, as otherwise it will be lifted by the chips during the milling process.
