Hospital Order
The hospital orders replaced the knightly orders in the hospital sector. They ran inns for pilgrims, but increasingly also hospitals and accommodations for the sick, the elderly and orphans, especially in the medieval cities, because there the family care was usually worse than in the country.
The word hospice is derived from the Latin hospitium for hospitality, accommodation.
The orders included the Hospital Order of St. Anthony and the Hospital Order of the Holy Spirit .
