Spitalul Brâncovenesc ( Eng .: The Hospital of Constantin Brâncoveanu or The Brâncoveanu Style Hospital ) was a hospital in Bucharest , Romania . It was demolished during socialism in 1984 to make way for the new Centrul Civic . It was located at the intersection between Calea Călărașilor and Bulevardul Mircea Vodă , in front of the Piața Mântuleasa .

history

The hospital was built between August 28, 1835 and October 14, 1838 by order of the wife of Grigore Basarab Brâncoveanu, Safta Brâncoveanu, and was originally intended for poor people. After construction it had 60 beds. The hospital was rebuilt after a serious fire between 1880 and 1890 in a style that was modern for the time. It now had a U-shape and a church in the inner courtyard, a huge main hall decorated with busts and numerous new rooms with a total of 240 beds. In 1904 new buildings as well as a medical school and a poor house were built.

After expropriating the wealth of the Brâncoveanu family , Charles II helped with necessary repairs through donations. At the time of the Second World War , the hospital was briefly converted into a military hospital and now had 500 beds. In 1949, the country's first “Clinic for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery” was founded in the hospital, which was managed by Acad until 1964. Al. Radulescu and then continued by Prof. Aurel Denischi. After the earthquake in 1977 , in which the hospital was badly damaged, it was decided to demolish it along with a fifth of the historic city center of Bucharest and the Halele Unirii to make way for the new Centrul Civic .
