history

View of the pointed tower

The round substructure of the tower was erected around 1180, the superstructure around 1450. Originally, the former watch tower was included in the fortification of the core town of Wertheim, which was built between 1200 and 1400.

The tower also served as a prison for "drunkards" and "quarrelsome women".

As the earliest structural evidence of the later town complex at the foot of the castle, the tower has a very high testimony value for the settlement and defense history of Wertheim. For the cityscape, especially for the Main and Tauber prospectuses, the pointed tower is still of elementary importance. In the years 2004/2005 masonry renovation and new construction of the adjacent buildings along the right Tauberstrasse were carried out.

architecture

The round substructure of the tower was built from house stones, the largely plastered superstructure, on the other hand, is octagonal with a sandstone cornice and corner blocks as well as protruding machicolation and a crowning tent roof. An existing slope of the substructure was compensated for with the superstructure.

The top tower is 36.5 meters high, with the entrance at a height of 10 meters only accessible via a ladder. It is protected according to § 28 (building) of the Baden-Württemberg Monument Protection Act.
