Pointed Church of St. Magdalena (Rheinau ZH)
The Church of St. Magdalena is historically the youngest of the three churches in Rheinau ZH . Because it stands in the tip of the river island behind the Rheinau monastery , it is also called the Spitzkirche . Together with the mountain church St. Nikolaus Rheinau , it is one of the few simultaneous churches in the canton of Zurich .
Development and construction history
The pointed church was built in 1587–1588 under Abbot Theobald Werlin von Greiffenberg. In 1761 a late baroque grotto was built into the choir of the church. It was designed according to the model of the Zwiefalten monastery with different materials from Switzerland and Germany. The grotto was removed during the 1931 renovation. From the abolition of the monastery in 1862 and the opening of the cantonal sanatorium and nursing home in the monastery buildings in 1867, the pointed church served the Reformed patients and, like the mountain church, was provided from Marthalen . It was renovated in 1991–1992 and has served as a wedding and concert church ever since. The interior was renovated in 2016, in which the paintings on the walls and the vault were renovated and preserved.
Building description
Exterior and roof turrets
The Church of St. Magdalena is located on the monastery island on the eastern corner. The single-nave building is completed by a round choir and has late Gothic windows with tracery . On the ridge of the nave there is a roof turret , which has been equipped with a half-timbered body and an open bell house since the renovation in 1903. The weather vane above the tower cross bears the coats of arms of the abbot and monastery Rheinau: Greif and Salm.
Interior and artistic equipment
The low nave is closed with a cross-chord vault . In 1612 the church was decorated with early baroque paintings. This equipment was rediscovered and taken out in 1930 during the renovation of the church. The fourteen emergency helpers are depicted in the window niches . The church can accommodate around 65 people.
