The splitting of wooden boats and ships is a fold on both sides of the fore stev , the keel and the stern . The planks are attached in the split so that there is no step at the transition to the stem and keel. With traditional construction methods, the resulting seam is caulked . The outer edge of the Sponung is used to plan and draw the lines of a boat in the line plan .
