Sport im Bild was the first German sports magazine, an “illustrated weekly for sport, society and theater” as it was initially stated in the title addition. This was later changed to "The Journal of Good Society". The magazine appeared weekly from 1895 to 1934 and was titled “Der Silberspiegel. The beautiful magazine for fashion and the beautiful things in life ”continued, which was published from 1934 to 1943 (bi-monthly). Both magazines were published in Vienna and Berlin.

The magazine was founded by the two Britons Andrew Pitcairn-Knowles and Horace F. Simon in Berlin and addressed a German-speaking readership. In the foreword to the first edition, the two editors wrote that with this magazine they wanted to show that Germany “stands by our role models - England and America - in terms of the execution of all sports on an equal footing”. After a test phase of three months, during which the magazine was published monthly, the response was so great that from then on it was published weekly at a price of 50 pfennigs . After half a year the circulation doubled and the price was reduced to 35 pfennigs. From 1899 a second edition was printed on thinner paper, which was specially intended for clubs and cost 20 pfennigs.

In 1904 Pitcairn-Knowles and Simon sold the magazine to the publisher August Scherl , who had previously contributed the supplement Sport im Wort ; Kurt Doerry became editor-in-chief . In 1912 the magazine had a circulation of 125,000. Over the years, the magazine - with the subtitle "Sport, Society, Theater" - became increasingly elitist and also focused on columnar topics, fashion, society and "elegant" sports such as horse racing, golf, tennis, polo and hunting there was a supplement of illustrated property advertisements . In 1913 the subtitle "Horse and Rider" was added.

Sport im Wort was initially published by the same publisher as a supplement to the magazine. At the end of the 1st quarter of 1900 the publisher announced the separation of the two papers in order to “ dedicate more interest to lawn games in ´Sport im Wort´ from now on ”. The single issue should cost 10 pfennigs, the subscription in the quarter 1 mark 50. At the same time, the German Sport News went into Sport in Word .
