Sport and technology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sport and Technology is a course in the fields of sport science with engineering . It is offered at several German universities.

Course content

By combining sports and engineering, technologies can be applied to sports and sports science. In this way, sports equipment or equipment materials can be developed and optimized in relation to athletic performance. Devices in the field of health and competitive sports are developed with a view to specific training goals. In addition, diagnostic instruments can be developed and used which are used to determine sports motor performance.

Sport and technology as an interdisciplinary science

The disciplines of sports engineering are very broad. They range from mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, sports science or computer science to electrical engineering. From these areas, technical sub-areas of sports engineering have emerged: performance diagnostics, sports informatics, measurement technology in sports and sports equipment technology. You interact strongly with the sports science areas of movement science (biomechanics and sports motor skills) and exercise science. This interaction is illustrated in the following figure.

Compared to pure sports science, which increasingly considers the processes within the athlete, sports engineering deals with external factors such as the interaction between athletes and their equipment or the environment.

Possible occupational fields

Due to the interdisciplinary nature, graduates have both sports science and engineering skills. Accordingly, the field of application is wide-ranging after graduating. Some examples are listed below.

  • Sports equipment development, production or standardization
  • Gait laboratories
  • Olympic and federal bases
  • Associations or clubs
  • Sports clinics
  • Health and rehabilitation centers
  • Research institutions.

courses

In addition to the founding of sport-technological associations, the German universities also took on the advancing technology in sport and developed special courses for this purpose.

Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg

Since the 1997/1998 winter semester, the sports and technology diploma course has been offered at the University of Magdeburg , making it the first course of its kind in Germany. The basic idea was to combine sports science with the possibilities of engineering. Thus, the basis should be created to understand, apply and expand the equipment used, e.g. measurement technology. In addition, the students should acquire the skills to develop and optimize sports equipment independently from the start.

The university offers sport and technology as an interdisciplinary course. It is offered in cooperation with the faculties of electrical engineering and information technology, mechanical engineering and human sciences, both as a bachelor's and master's degree. The course is assigned to the area of sports science, which belongs to Institute 3: Sports, Language and Philosophy of the Faculty of Human Sciences. Admission takes place in the winter semester.

Chemnitz University of Technology

The Technical University of Chemnitz offers the opportunity to study sports engineering in Bachelor and Master. The course belongs to the professorship for Sports Equipment Technology in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. As a rule, admission takes place in the winter semester.

German Sport University Cologne

The master's degree in Human Technology in Sports and Medicine is offered at the German Sport University Cologne . This is in English, has a standard study time of 4 semesters and is completed with 120 credit points as a Master of Science.

Admission requirements include a bachelor's degree in a related subject and an English certificate.

Darmstadt University of Technology

At the TU Darmstadt it is possible to study sports science and computer science. This course is offered in both the Bachelor's and Master's.

University of Bayreuth

For the 2017/18 winter semester, the University of Bayreuth is offering a master’s degree in sports technology. The course lasts 4 semesters and concludes with the M.Sc. from. This is a mainly German-speaking full-time course.

International study opportunities

Internationally, the course is offered at the following universities:

  • University College Falmouth: Performance Sportswear Design (Bachelor)
  • University of Bath: Sports Engineering (Master)
  • University of Sheffield: Sports Engineering (Master)
  • University Loughborough: Sports Technology (Bachelor)
  • University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien: Sports Equipment Technology (Bachelor, Master)
