Language learning advice

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Language learning counseling aims to support learners in learning a foreign language, to take responsibility for their own learning process and to find efficient learning paths.

Language learning counseling is a learner autonomy concept in which a knowledgeable counselor plays a crucial role. This helps the learner to become aware of their own learning process, to recognize their individual requirements, motives and needs, to identify concrete and feasible goals, before organizing access to usable resources (“tools” and learning strategies) in a later step . The language learning counseling is aimed at all those seeking advice who want to learn or want to learn a foreign language, but who are often unable to adapt their learning process to their needs and preferences.

The counseling can take place as a face-to-face situation in direct contact between the student and the counselor or from a distance with the phone or with the help of new communication media such as chat , e-mail and Skype .

Characteristics of a person who are required as a consultant and supporter when learning a foreign language, for example, are comparable to the characteristics and requirements of a teacher in whatever discipline: empathy with the student, understanding of their individual life situation, impartiality and neutrality, acceptance of their learning goals and Analysis of his individual talents, talents and deficits. Just as important is the establishment of a relationship of trust between those involved and the identification of limits, problems and development opportunities. The aim of the counseling is to help the student to recognize his learning problems so that he can make the right decisions for himself in order to successfully learn a foreign language.
