The Spring Creek Correctional Center ( SCCC ) is the only maximum security prison in the US state of Alaska . The approximately 1.3 km² large area of the penal facility is located in the municipal area of the city of Seward in the Kenai Peninsula Borough on the opposite side of the city from Resurrection Bay .

The institution was built as a Level III Facility or Maximum Security Facility in 1988 with a full occupancy capacity of 412 inmates. Due to the increased demands on detention places, these have now been increased to more than 500. The inmates of the detention center are mostly the portion of Alaska state inmates who are serving longer sentences. Among other things, those sentenced to the maximum sentence - life imprisonment - are in Spring Creek (the death penalty is not used in Alaska). Up to 200 employees take care of the security within the institution. The correctional facility is operated by the Alaska Department of Corrections , the law enforcement agency for the state of Alaska.

The construction of the detention center in Spring Creek cost the state of Alaska about 44.68 million dollars (30 million euros). Architecturally, the institute was built in the campus design. The prisoners are housed in three separate buildings. The larger main building serves administrative purposes. Within the detention blocks, the inmates are again separated according to their level of danger and the required security level. As prisoners with sentences of less than 10 years are also incarcerated in Spring Creek, they must be housed separately from the inmates with security risk.

One of the most famous inmates was the serial killer Robert Christian Hansen .
