Searching for traces (Holocaust remembrance)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Searching for traces , also called Back to the Roots , was an exchange project carried out by the Republic of Austria from 1994 to 2009 between students from Austria and Israel .

Student exchange

The aim of the project was to promote exchange and relationships between Austrian and Israeli young people. 15 young Israelis with Austrian family roots were invited to Austria for ten days. Together with 15 young Austrians, an attempt was made to find out previously unknown information about the ancestors of the Israeli youths and to trace their traces by driving to the places where the ancestors lived.

Although the focus of this project was on the search for clues, i.e. the gathering of information about family roots, just as much emphasis was placed on developing Israeli-Austrian friendships. This included visiting sights, memorials and Austrian cities together. For example, the Vienna Central Cemetery , the Mauthausen concentration camp and, for genealogical purposes, the Austrian State Archives or the registry office of the Jewish Community in the Vienna City Temple were visited.

Another component of the project were the days of the young Israelis and Austrians that could be designed individually and freely. This served the Israelis to develop their own relationship with Austria today. In addition, everyone involved was able to get to know Austria from the perspective of "the other".

The search for clues was organized by the Federal Ministry for Families and Youth and was a project in the field of youth policy.
