Gauge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The track dimension is the distance between the two wheel flange flanks of a wheel set or two corresponding idler wheels of rail vehicles .

The track dimension is measured 10 mm above the running circle. In the case of a German main railway wheel set (i.e. standard gauge , a track width with a nominal dimension of 1435 millimeters (4 '8.5 ″) between the inner edges of the rail heads) the track dimension is between 1410 and 1426 mm. The track clearance indicates how far the wheelset can be moved from touching the wheel flange on the left rail to touching the wheel flange on the right rail. The following relationship exists between gauge and gauge :

Track width = track dimension + track play - 1 mm

The difference of approx. One millimeter is due to the fact that the gauge and gauge are not measured at the same height.
