Sredniki

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sredniki ( Russian Средники , German also Mittwöchler ) were a Christian community in Russia in the 19th and 20th centuries.

history

The community was probably founded in the early 1880s in the village of Leipnik in the Tambov governorate by the farmer Kirill Alexejew and was active in the Astrakhan , Saratov and Tambov governorates .

Even in the late 20th century there are said to have been individual Sredniki in Russia.

Religious orientation

The Sredniki rejected the Russian Orthodox Church after the reforms of Patriarch Nikon of 1652. They had no priests themselves.

The Sredniki were convinced that when Tsar Peter the Great changed the beginning of the year, a calculation error had been made and that the current calendar was eight years too far. So for them the year 1900 was the year 1892 and they therefore celebrated Easter on April 5th instead of April 9th like the Russian Church. Wednesday was their Sunday, so they were called Sredniki (from sreda Wednesday ).
