The City University of Osaka ( jap. 大阪市立大学 , Osaka Shiritsu daigaku ; Engl. Osaka City University , in short: OCU ) is the largest urban university in Japan . The main campus is in Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka .

history

The origin of the university was the Osaka commercial college ( 大阪 商業 講習 所 , Ōsaka shōgyō kōshūjo ), which was founded in 1880. In 1885 the school was renamed Osaka Commercial School ( 大阪 商業 学校 , Ōsaka shōgyō gakkō ). It became a municipal school in 1889. The city council of Osaka could not receive the second state higher commercial school ( Kobe received it: current University of Kobe ). In 1901, the city reorganized the city trade school into Osaka City Higher Trade School ( 市立 大阪 高等 商業 学校 , Shiritsu Ōsaka kōtō shōgyō gakkō ). In 1928 it became the first municipal university in Japan, the Osaka Commercial College ( 大阪 商科 大学 , Ōsaka shōka daigaku ). Hajime Seki, the mayor, declared the ideal of the city university: "It should not be just a copy (imitation) of the state universities" and, "The university should stand with the city, and the city with the university."

In 1943, during the Pacific War , the Marxist or socialist professors and students were arrested (the so-called Osaka Commercial College affair ). In 1944 the school buildings were used by the Japanese Navy, so after the war (1945) the United States Army occupied the entire campus (US Army Camp Sakai). In 1955 the entire campus was finally given back.

In 1949, the university was merged with two other municipal technical schools (technical college and women's technical school) to form Osaka City University . In 1955 the former City Medical School became the Medical Faculty.
