Before the mechanization of stone extraction , pusher were specialized stone cutters in a quarry . Bumpers cut large blocks of stone into small, manageable units. These were then handed over to so-called tippers for further processing . One of the distinguishing features of a good pusher was that it could see at a glance how many paving stones could be knocked out of a block.
