Störtebeker Park
The Störtebeker Park is a play, learning and leisure park on the North Sea coast in Wilhelmshaven . The park is open in the summer season between April and October. Störtebeker Park is around two hectares in size and is located on Freiligrathstrasse in the north of the city.
The thematic offers of the Störtebeker Park are aimed at schools, kindergartens and facilities for the disabled. A second target group for visitors are families with young children.
Previously unemployed people conceived and built Störtebeker Park. Today's operation is carried out by this group of people as part of publicly funded employment and qualification projects. Volunteers enable extended opening times.
history
The Störtebeker Park arose from the idea of expanding the offer of the non-profit educational institution “BeKA - Advice, Communication and Work - Society for Social and Professional Integration eV” with an offer for the general public.
BeKA was founded in 1984. It has made it its business to minimize (youth) unemployment and its social consequences. In 1985 several workshops were founded and employment and qualification projects were implemented. The Störtebeker Park idea was born in the early 1990s. The city of Wilhelmshaven provided around two hectares of land in the north of the city on Freiligrathstrasse. The Federal Employment Agency and the responsible job center sponsored various projects that carried out work in the areas of civil engineering, gardening and landscaping, as well as childcare and service. Grants from the European Union as well as donations from companies and private individuals enable the purchase of equipment and materials.
A leisure and environmental park was created, which was designed primarily as a learning park, both for visitors and for employees.
Replicas of historical buildings such as the Sibetsburg or the Wilhelmshaven town hall invite you to study the regional history. Half-timbered buildings offer space for activities, events and seminars.
The idea of environmental protection is brought closer to the visitor by means of a reed sewage treatment plant , solar systems for the production of hot water and electricity, rainwater reservoirs and buildings with green roofs, etc. and their implementation is demonstrated.
