St-Martin is the Roman Catholic church of Serviers-et-Labaume in the French department of Gard .

description

The church of St-Martin was built in the 12th century on the foundations of an older Gallo-Roman sanctuary in the typical style of the Romanesque country churches in Languedoc as a single-nave hall church with a semicircular apse as the end of the choir . In a bull by Pope Calixt II in 1119, St-Martin was mentioned as belonging to the Abbey of Saint-Gilles . Although the church was repeatedly the target of destruction in armed conflicts, the medieval Romanesque character was preserved in contrast to numerous other buildings in the region .

St-Martin was built just below Serviers Castle and was affected in the battles for the fortress during the Wars of Religion in 1580 and 1681. In April 1662 the restoration of the church began. On August 7, 1703, the church was burned down by the camisards in renewed religious conflicts. The church received its current structure with a classical facade with bell gable in the course of the 19th century.
