history

St. Anne's Church, 1834

The St. Anne's Church was built between 1775 and 1779 by the St. Anne's parish in place of a 40-year-old church building, making it one of the oldest churches in the city. The builder was the imperial court architect Juri Felten (1730–1801).

Between 1925 and 1934 the theological seminar of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Soviet Union took place here regularly, and in 1935 the church was closed. The building was retained, however, since the "Spartak" cinema was opened in the converted church in 1940 .

In 1992 glasnost made it theoretically possible to return it to the church, but in practice it was not possible due to the lack of an alternative space for the cinema. However, the congregation was given permission to celebrate services here again .

After the cinema was closed in 2001 for economic reasons, instead of the expected handover to the parish, an unauthorized conversion into a nightclub took place, which was in operation for most of 2002. In the course of the eviction order in November 2002, the building burned down on December 6th.
