St. Barnabas Cathedral

The St. Barnabas Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral of the Anglican Church of Melanesia in Honiara , capital of the Solomon Islands .

It is located not far east of the center of Honiara on the Kukum Highway, the main arterial road to the east, and covers an area of 160 × 73 m. The cathedral was inaugurated on June 16, 1969 and has 900 seats. Before that, the smaller All Saints' Church in the center of Honiara served as a cathedral.

In front of the St. Barnabas Cathedral rises a statue of St. Barnabas with the hairstyle and clothes typical of Melanesia for men. A monument erected in 1999 to commemorate the proselytizing of the Solomon Islands can also be seen in front of the cathedral. Next to her was the Melanesia House , a multi-purpose hall that is used for cultural events. The German word "house" is used in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands to designate an important building, although the English spelling "house" is not used. The use of the German spelling is explained by the fact that part of Papua New Guinea was a German colony until 1918, and that some German terms found their way into the languages of Melanesia as loan words.
