St. Brictius is a church in the south of the city of Wolfenbüttel , whose congregation belongs to the Wolfenbüttel provost in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig .

history

The suggestion for the construction of the church in 1118 goes back to the prioress of the Steterburg monastery and a resolution of the bishop of Halberstadt . The originally Catholic church only became a Protestant church under the reign of Duke Julius .

The church in Linden (district of Wolfenbüttel) was founded on November 13th 1118, the feast day of the patron saint, St. Brictius , and made of rubble stone in the Romanesque style. Of the nine hundred year history, only the last four hundred years have been well documented. It is unclear whether St. Brictius in the east was closed with an apse or whether it has always had a rectangular floor plan.

St. Brictius with community center

In 1696 a small sacristy was torn down. Approx. In 1720 the windows were enlarged. Around 1865, the church was expanded by 12 feet, i.e. almost 4 meters, to the east. For this it was necessary to remove the entire east facade. In 1982 the community center was added to the north of the church. In order to enlarge the church space, the northern side gallery was torn down and a breakthrough to the community hall was created. Since then, another 100 places can be offered in the church.

Interior

The baptismal bowl - made in 1669 - is embossed from brass and richly engraved and enlivened with a surrounding baroque flower tendril frieze and flower shapes. The inscription indicates the donor.

Two paraments are kept in an antependium . The origin and the year of creation are unknown. The extensive restoration in 2006/2007 was not only carried out by the St. Brictius parish and the regional church, but also by the Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz Foundation , the Volksbank Wolfenbüttel-Salzgitter and their foundation, as well as numerous individual donors.
