History and design

The church, built in 1506, had to be demolished due to its dilapidation. On July 25, 1910, master bricklayer Karl Haase and his people began building the new church - the foundation walls of the old church were surrounded by the new foundation. The foundation stone was laid on August 25, 1910 with the Secret Church Councilor Wuttich from Allstedt, Pastor Strümpfel from Sachsenburg and residents of Oldisleben. The initiator of the new building of the church, Pastor Stößner, died on July 4th 1910 at the age of 48 years.

The church was built according to plans by the architect MB Schlag from Frankenhausen, who designed it in the Art Nouveau style. Supervision was in the hands of government builder Lindig from Weimar, while the architect and construction officer Fahro from Halle was entrusted with supervision and management. The new church was consecrated on December 3, 1911 (1st Advent).

The winged altar from the previous church is the work of an unknown master from the late Gothic period around 1500. The three large windows in the chancel - the Christmas window, the crucifixion window and the Ascension window - were privately donated and installed on September 22, 1911.

From 1983 to 1994 Pastor Martin Steiger took over the pastor's office in Oldisleben. In 1988 he planned and carried out the comprehensive and stylish renovation of the interior of the church. As an experienced consultant , Horst Jahresling had his hat on. As a highlight, Pastor Steiger succeeded in bringing the St. Thomas Choir with their St. Thomas Cantor Hans-Joachim Rotzsch to a concert on October 13, 1989 .

Bells

During the two world wars, three of the bronze church bells were melted down as a metal donation from the German people . The oldest from 1513 was spared.

The casting of this bell in the Johanniskirche was commissioned after the consecration of the old church in Erfurt in 1506. The bell founder was Heinrich Ciegler - his foundry marks were HC, h. c. or a sickle. In 1513 the work was completed. On the relief of the bell is Mary in a long, wrinkled robe. She wears a crown and stands on a crescent moon surrounded by the rays of the sun. She carries her child in her arms.

When the three cast iron steel bells purchased as replacements had exceeded their service life, they had to be replaced. The first new bronze bell was cast on October 28, 2011 and the other two on October 19, 2012 in the Bachert bell foundry in Karlsruhe and welcomed in Oldisleben on the 1st of Advent 2011 and 2012, respectively. The new casting of the three bells took place during the term of office of Pastor Reinhardt Süpke.

Former church in town

A previous church St. Nicolai from the year 972 was probably in the Unterdorf in the Backhausgasse until 1715. It probably belonged to a monastery.

Varia

  • Because of its structural design, mockers call the imposing pulpit a “submarine pulpit”.
