St. Liborius Medal for Unity and Peace
The St. Liborius Medal for Unity and Peace was donated in 1977 by Archbishop of Paderborn Johannes Joachim Degenhardt in the run-up to the first direct elections to the European Parliament.
The medal is awarded every five years to personalities who have made a contribution to the peaceful unity of Europe on a Christian basis.
Previous winners are:
- Leo Tindemans , former Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium (1977),
- Jan Cardinal Willebrands , former President of the Secretariat for Christian Unity (1982),
- Pierre Pflimlin , former President of the European Parliament (1986),
- Csilla von Boeselager , founder of the Hungarian Maltese Caritas Service (1992),
- Wladyslaw Bartoszewski (1997), Foreign Minister of the Republic of Poland
- Helmut Kohl , former Federal Chancellor D. of the Federal Republic of Germany. (1999 - deviating from the five-year cycle)
- Otto von Habsburg (2002)
- Jean-Claude Juncker (2007)
