St. Mary's Church ( Aramaic ܥܺܕܬܳܐ ܕܝܳܠܕܰܬ݂ ܐܰܠܳܗܳܐ `Idto d-Yolda t Aloho , Kurdish Dêra Meryemê , Turkish Meryem Ana kilisesi ) is a Syrian Orthodox church from the year 280 in Diyarbakır . Today it is located in the Lâle-Bey district and, along with the badly crumbled St. George's Church, is the only (partially) preserved church in the city.

When Diyarbakır was still known by its Syriac-Aramaic name Amed , the Church of St. Mary was the seat of the Church of the East . As the headquarters of the patriarch , it produced numerous Assyrian theologians and patriarchs. Some of them found their final resting place in St. Mary's Church. The church has numerous relics , including the bones of St. Thomas the Apostle and St. Jacob de Serugh .

The building was first erected as a pagan temple in the 1st century BC . The current construction dates back to the 3rd century and has been restored several times. The original church was probably a large central building with a three-part naos , to which a rectangular presbytery with an apse was added to the east . Only this choir room still exists today and is used as a place of prayer by the Aramaic Christians of the city , who have only made up a small minority since the genocide of the Assyrians and Arameans .
