St. Martin's Square

The St. Martin's Square is a square in the center of the old city of Kaiserslautern . It was probably created in connection with the department store and granary in the east of the square, which has been attested since the Middle Ages (demolished in 1808). The triangular square leads to Steinstrasse and Klosterstrasse in the east, the point in the west continues beyond Spittelstrasse through Marktstrasse. The square got its current name for the 700th anniversary of the city with the completion of the old town renovation; before that, the buildings were counted among the streets mentioned above. The eastern part of the square itself was called Kornmarkt, the western part was called “Auf der Brücke” because of the shear bridge that ran over the Lauter .

The fountain by Eduard Koelwel (1882–1966) forms the center of the square . In a round sandstone basin there is a cast-iron fountain column with swans as gargoyles, above two further fountain bowls. At the end there is a putto with water gushing out of its drinking horn. On the west side of the square there was a spoli column built in 1976 . Three large chestnut trees provide shade.

The development on the edge of the square, exclusively two or three-story plastered buildings, dates almost entirely from the 18th and early 19th centuries. As former public buildings or inns, the facades are representative. Martinskirche is on the south side . Today the buildings are mostly used as inns, the former town house with the portal adorned with coat of arms in the north of the square is now a music school, the southern boundary is a residential and commercial building.

In May 2016 there was a fatal fire in the office building at St.-Martins-Platz 1, in which the building was almost completely destroyed and now has to be demolished. The cause of the fire was probably a defective electrical installation in the upstairs office. However, according to its current tenant, the building is to be rebuilt.
