Michaeliskirche

The Protestant St. Michaelis Church is located in Kranichfeld in the Weimarer Land district of Thuringia . It belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Kranichfeld in the Weimar parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

The church was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. Around 1340 it was called the main church. Kranichfeld belonged to the Archdiakonat St. Mariae in Erfurt and thus to Kurmainz . At the end of the 15th century the church was dilapidated and too small for the growing community. With funds from several collections collected in Thuringia between 1493 and 1496 , a renovation of the church in the late Gothic style that came close to a new building could be undertaken. The auxiliary bishop of Mainz and vicar general Johannes Bonemilch consecrated the church building on August 24 and 25, 1499.

The first bell for the new church was procured in 1520, a second in 1622; The third followed in 1746. The interior of the church was renovated in 1703 and 1704. From 1735 to 1738 Johann Francke from Buttelstedt built a new organ, an eight-legged work of two pianos, has 22 registers with the epitome of the tremulant and cymbal wheel .

After a brief closure due to the danger of collapse, the church was extensively restored in 1889 under the direction of the ducal master builder Rommel from Saalfeld. In 1906 an electrical lighting system was put into use. For the two bells that were melted down at the beginning of the First World War, two steel bells were purchased in 1921. The big bell was not made in either World War I or World War II and is still in use. Another interior renovation due to moisture damage in the chancel took place in 1934. The Francke organ was also renewed.

When the church bridge was blown up on April 12, 1945, all the windows in the nave shattered. In addition, the roof and the tower with the tower button were affected. Immediate repairs and window renewals prevented further damage. The glass Luther picture above the door and the rose window was installed in 1948 and the tower knob was repaired in 1949.

The interior was significantly redesigned during the last renovations carried out in 1976 and 1977, followed by the consecration of the church on September 18, 1977 by the provincial bishop emeritus Ingo Braecklein .

Furnishing

A grave slab of Countess Walpurga von Gleichen dates from 1507, other gravestones and epitaphs date from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Since 1998 the tower has had a radio-controlled clock with an illuminated dial.
