The St. Peter and Paul Church is the house of worship of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Porta Westfalica - Veltheim ( Minden-Lübbecke district ).

history

The erection of the first sacred building on the site of today's St. Peter and Paul Church is said to go back to the noble Hildburg, the founder of the Möllenbeck monastery . The Möllenbeck Foundation was probably made around 896. Veltheim was first mentioned in a document at the end of the 12th century, when Noble Mathildis von Ricklingen donated eleven farms to the church.

The Romanesque quarry stone church in Veltheim was expanded to the north in the 15th century by a vaulted transept. The Reformation was introduced around 1530. At the end of the 19th century the old church was in considerable disrepair, and it had become too small for the growing community. However, the decision was not made to demolish the church, but rather for a thorough renovation and expansion. In 1912 the traditional east-facing of the church was given up and the choir was relocated to a new southern extension of the church. In addition, the Romanesque tower was raised. In 1996 the church was named St. Peter and Paul .
