St. Stephen's Church was first mentioned in documents in 1255. It is still today in its oldest parts as a village church. Located on a small hill in the middle of the village, it served on the one hand for defensive purposes and on the other hand as the center of secular assemblies. The arched windows were placed directly under the ceiling and therefore only lit up small parts of the church. Despite many modifications, the church impressively demonstrates the effect of the Romanesque structure. The south side is characterized by an interesting tympanum depicting the stoning of St. Stephen . The tympanum is a decorated panel between the lintel and the semi-arch. These reliefs can be dated back to around 1130/1140. Another historical tympanum from 1549 is in the anteroom of the church. This was originally located in the old Mehring Cistercian monastery and was transferred to the church in 2003 to protect it from the weather.

Inside the choir, which is closed on three sides and has a flat roof, you can see arched curtain windows from the Renaissance period as well as some memorial plaques. On the one hand, they commemorate the participants of Mehringen in the Franco-German War and, on the other hand, they are dedicated to the father of the country, Duke Leopold Friedrich von Anhalt . There are also various wall paintings and galleries inside the church.

In 1881 it was decided to build a church tower. The new 35.6 meter high tower with a clock tower was built in the neo-Gothic style. At the end of the last century, the interior of the church was renovated and renovated. In 2015 the new tower clock with new dials was put into operation.

Bells

The village church also had bronze bells from the former Mehringen monastery , which was donated by Oda von Mehringen in 1222 and dissolved in 1525 during the Peasants' War . Only the ruins of the monastery church and some other parts of the building that are still in use have been preserved. The bronze bells were removed during the world wars and later replaced by steel bells that still ring over the village today.
