St. Andrew's Church is an Anglican parish and church on Burns Avenue in San Ignacio , Belize . It was founded in 1905.

history

St. Andrew's Church is part of the Anglican Diocese of Belize , which is part of the Church in the Province of the West Indies . The community had been located in the city center of San Ignacio since the British colonial rule . The first church service room was on Far West Street , the first priest was Reverend CG MacArthur from 1905 to 1907. In 1907 a young Belizer, William Robert Hope, took over the leadership of the congregation as Deacon . Hope later became Canon , Rector of San Ignacio, and the first ordained native priest in the Diocese of Belize. He served in St. Andrew's Parish from 1907 to 1918. With a donation of land from John O. Waight , the church and ward moved to Burns Avenue in 1918, and Canon Hope was removed from serving the church at Gales Point . The St. Andrew's Ward held their worship meetings in makeshift premises until a beautiful wooden sanctuary was completed at the end of 1925 and consecrated by the bishop on February 28, 1926. At the time, the Reverend Arnold Stackhouse was the priest-in-charge. The church became known as "the second St. Andrew's Church". A vicarage ( rectory ) was soon built on it in front of the church and an existing school building (on the site on which the Community Center of the church stands today) was renovated.

On Easter Monday, April 13, 1998, the "second St. Andrew's Church" was demolished due to irreparable damage from termites . A new cement building was constructed between April 27 and November 7, 1998. The enormous task of fundraising began in 1995 under the leadership of the English priest Ian Hutchinson Cervantes (1994–1997) and was continued by Rev. Mark Rogers in 1997 (1997–2000). The building was designed by Bimco and built by Marcus Chen. It was consecrated to the Glory of Almighty God on November 8, 1998 by Sylvester Romero Palma , the then Bishop of Belize.

church service

In all the structural changes to the church, the altar was always the original center of worship. Canon Hope had obtained three beautifully carved altar panels from England. The altar itself was a gift from James Massiah for the dedication of the church in 1926. The three altar plates represent vines, implicitly the communion with wine and the blood of Christ and sheaves of wheat - the bread of communion and the body of Christ.

Usually priests have served at St. Andrew's every three to four years, so there is a long list of former priests. Above all, it is to be thanked the congregation with its lay executive committee that the congregation exists into the 21st century.

Right now , Right Reverend Philip Wright , Bishop of Belize, and Reverend David B. Alenskis are in charge of the ward (priest-in-charge and missionary in association with the Society of Anglican Missionaries and Senders (SAMS-USA)).
