St. Ansgar (Bremerhaven-Leherheide)
The St. Ansgar Church is the Roman Catholic church in the Bremerhaven district of Leherheide on the Mecklenburger Weg. It belongs to the parish Hl. Herz Jesu Bremerhaven-Lehe in the Dean's Office Bremerhaven of the Diocese of Hildesheim.
history
In 1957 Leherheide received its first own Catholic church. It was about the Nissenkirche , which stood in the Bürgerpark in Geestemünde as a chapel for US troops. It was dismantled and rebuilt in an improved form in Leherheide. It was consecrated as St. Ansgar Church on October 27, 1957 by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen from Hildesheim.
Due to the growing number of parishioners in the prosperous district, it was decided to build a new church. From May 1972 the modern new building was planned by the Bremerhaven architect Jo Filke . The consecration took place on December 14, 1974 by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen.
Architecture and equipment
The external effect of the church is determined by the tent-like roof and the tower that is fused with the church interior. The church forms a quarter circle with adjoining adjoining rooms. The white-gray interior is characterized by brightness and space.
Wilhelm Keudel created an altar, tabernacle, ambo, baptismal font and holy water stone from travertine . The tree of life crucifix made of a copper-zinc alloy was completed by Heinrich-Gerhard Bücker from Vellern, Warendorf district. The work began by the artist Wilhelm Keudel from Salzgitter-Schäferstuhl, who died early.
The red stalls are rounded towards the center of the altar. The red continues in the tower stele. In the rear area there is a Marienkapelle with the sculpture "Maria with the Child" by Heinrich-Gerhard Bücker and a confessional room. To the side of the chancel there is a choir niche on the left and a baptismal niche on the right.
In 1997, the artist Benedict Schmitz from Ingolstadt created the Mosaic Way of the Cross. Eleven pictures on two elongated friezes depict in symbolic concentration Jesus' path of redemption from the Passover meal to the Easter victory.
Wilhelm Keudel created the portal with the semi-sculptural figure of the church's namesake, St. Ansgar.
