The St. Cornelius Church on Eiler Strasse in the Rath / Heumar district of Cologne is a Roman Catholic church in the Archdiocese of Cologne . Along with the parish church of the Divine Redeemer, it is the second church within the district. The parish is part of the Catholic Parish Association Roncalli am Heumarer Dreieck. The church dedicated to St. Cornelius was built in 1834/35 in neo-Romanesque style, the associated tower in 1886.

Location and surroundings

The church is located on Eiler Strasse in the Rath / Heumar district in the east of Cologne . It is one of two Catholic churches in the district. The Rath / Heumar pastoral office is in the immediate vicinity. About 100 meters to the north is the preserved Romanesque tower of the former Alt St. Cornelius church .

History of the parish and the church

Since the 11th century, today's parish Heumar was assigned to the area of the Urbach parish. On September 10, 1698, the parish was founded in Heumar and thus separated from the Urbach parish. Since then, the Abbot of Deutz, the parish of Heumar has been subordinate to the Deutz monastery, has appointed monks as pastors in Heumar. The community lived primarily through generous donations: among other things, an early measurement fund was set up in order to be able to maintain a priest for an early mass.

From 1802 on, the pastor of Heumar was appointed by the Archbishop of Cologne after the monastery in Deutz had been dissolved. In 1833 the Rath district, which had previously belonged to the Merheim parish, was merged with the Heumar parish. After the dilapidated old church was demolished, the new church was built in 1834/35. As a feudal lord, the Prussian state took on a third of the costs.

After the Mülhens family moved into Röttgen Castle near Heumar in 1909, a close connection was established between the parish of St. Cornelius and the Mülhens family. The parish of St. Cornelius owes many foundations to the family, including the electrical organ system, two bells and the renovation of the church kindergarten. The church windows and the altarpieces of the Mother of God and St. Cornelius were also financed from their foundations.

In 1953 the district of Rath was separated again from the parish Heumar and raised to its own parish. In addition, after a long discussion, the new parish received a third of the parish fund as a dowry. In 1957 the church was closed due to the risk of collapse and extensively renovated. In 1964 a new sacristy was built because the old one was around the chancel and was only 1.70 m wide.

In the course of the merger of parishes in the Archdiocese of Cologne, the parish of Heumar with the parish of Rath and the parishes from Ostheim and Neubrück became the parish association Roncalli Am Heumarer Dreieck, named after Pope Johannes XXIII. , united.

The church is a brick hall church with a gable roof. It has a circular apse. The building is classicist. The neo-Romanesque tower built in 1886, planned and implemented by the Cologne architect Theodor Kremer , is octagonal and has a slate folding roof.

window

The original windows of the church were destroyed in the air raid in 1942. The new windows created on July 1, 1956, which the widow Maria Mülhens had her company gave her 4711 for her 75th birthday, come from the design by Benedictine monk Brother Notker. The windows on the right show the glorious mysteries of the Rosary, those on the left show the joys.

Statue of St. Cornelius

On the east wall of the church, next to the apse, there is a statue of St. Cornelius. The representation of the church patron is the jewel of the church. Origin and age are not known, legend has it that the statue of the saint was washed ashore during a flood in 1784. According to legend, the towns of Rath and Heumar were spared this flood through the intercession of the saint. Since then, the parish of Heumar has been under the patronage of St. Cornelius. When the old, small Romanesque parish church was demolished in 1825 due to dilapidation, the Cornelius statue was moved to the vicarage barn, which served as an emergency church, for 10 years. In the nave of today's parish church, completed in 1834, the Cornelius statue was given a place of honor on the Cornelius altar. After the restoration in 1964, the statue was placed on a marble console. The renovation of the interior in 2016 meant that the statue was moved to the left so that it does not protrude into the surface of the newly installed projector.

Altar and apse

According to the specifications of the Second Vatican Council , a massive altar from Aachen bluestone was made by the sculptor Sepp Hürten in the 1960s. The apse has been redesigned and now has white leaf ornaments. At the top of the apse crown is a dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The open apse wall is supported by four pillars, between them five golden reliefs with different themes are attached: four sacrificial scenes from the Old Testament (Abel, Noah, Abraham and Melchizedech) and in the middle a relief with the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. The column closings show the evangelist iconographies.

Paintings and pictures

Paintings of the crowned Mother of God and Saint Cornelius in papal regalia adorn the north and south walls of the church. Among them are the Stations of the Cross.

Adoration and pilgrimage to St. Cornelius

The news of the legend about the Cornelius statue caused a sensation in the area and made the parish of Heumar known. With the help of Pastor Hieronymus Gymnich, a relic of St. Cornelius was transferred from the church treasure of St. Severin to Heumar in 1818. It is part of the top of the skull. Since then a pilgrimage tradition has developed; People from the area around Heumar made a pilgrimage to the parish church to pray for the saint's intercession. This also led to an economic upswing in Rath-Heumar. The Cornelius Festival with a fair on September 16 was well known in Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine. For the worship of the relic, the goldsmith HJ Heppekausen made an approx. 20 cm large monstrance. In the last few decades the worship of St. Cornelius has become quieter. For the annual parish patronage, there is only a festive mass on the following Sunday evening.
