The Church of the Divine Redeemer is a Roman Catholic church in the Rath / Heumar district of Cologne . The church was built between 1953 and 1955 based on a design by Fritz Schaller . It is the earliest example in Schaller's work of breaking through the traditional principle of manageable space and regrouping the spatial structure. When building the church, the architect was already following principles for the architecture of churches that only became common after the Second Vatican Council . As a pre-conciliar church (built in the 1950s) it already had a people's altar and naves facing the altar from all sides.

On March 28, 1954, the church and its bells were consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Ferche after the rectorate parish of the Divine Redeemer was established on November 11, 1953. Hans Macke was appointed rectorate pastor. 1973 the rectorate parish was raised to a parish, Macke became the pastor of the parish; In 1978 he retired, Hartmut Hold was appointed pastor of the parish of the Divine Redeemer. After the merging of the parishes of St. Cornelius and the Divine Redeemer (Rath / Heumar), St. Servatius and the Holy Angels (Ostheim) and St. Adelheid (Neubrück) to form the Roncalli "Am Heumarer Dreieck" parish, Gerd Breidenbach became pastor of the Parish association.

Several groups have contributed to the history of the parish. A scout tribe has existed since 1947, an altar boy since the parish was founded in 1954 and a group of Maltese youth in Cologne. A library has been located in the vicinity of the church since 1954, and a Montessori children's house was inaugurated next to the church in 1957.

Architecture and equipment

The church is a multi-nave hall church with transept-like extensions. The continuous gable roof was pulled down far above them . In the crossing stands the altar made of red sandstone in the form of a table, raised by three steps . A wooden cross with a silver body from the work of Karl-Josef Heppekausen hangs above this. The chancel is complemented by a skylight in the roof. The concrete ceiling is decorated with various mosaics by the sculptor Prof. Hein Wimmer . He also created the altar, the baptismal font, the holy water fonts and the tabernacle, which is to the right behind the altar when viewed from the central nave. It rests on a red sandstone base and is decorated with gilded leaf ornaments. the organ from 1961 is located in the eastern part of the church near the altar.

The Marian altar, also made of red sandstone, is located in the rear, northern part of the church. On it is a wooden representation of the Mother of God. Today this chapel is often used for weekday masses and baptisms.

The church building encloses a rectangular garden courtyard. The bronze Stations of the Cross by Joseph Hoentgesberg are located in this gallery . Around the main portal in the south is a partially colored glazed side wall in a concrete framework. The design for the colored glazing comes from Hubert Schaffmeister. The bell was cast in 1954 with consideration for the sound of the bell by St. Cornelius Heumar .
