St. Dragon Girl ( jap. 聖（セ イ ン ト）♥ ド ラ ゴ ン ガ ー ル , Seinto Doragon Gāru ) is a manga by Natsumi Matsumoto , which can be classified into the genres of Shōjo , Magical Girl , Romance , Comedy and Action.

St. Dragon Girl tells about 16-year-old Momoka, who is a martial arts master, and her Chinese sandbox friend Ryuga, who comes from a family of magicians. They are actually in love with each other, but they are far too busy creating order in their environment, in which snake kings, hypnotists and monster cats keep appearing, for them to be able to honestly confess their feelings to each other. By joining forces, they have been able to put an end to their numerous enemies particularly well since the spirit of a dragon - the guardian spirit of Ryuga's family - roamed Momoka.

  • Momoka Sendo is the main character in this series, also known as "Dragon Girl". She is 16 years old and comes from a family of martial artists and is accordingly good at this field. She grew up in Yokohama with Ryuga, her childhood friend. She adores pandas and collects them. Her favorite cuddly toy, Ronron, is a gift from Ryuga, with whom she is also in love. The dragon who was summoned by Ryuga drove into them. As soon as he breaks the seal, the dragon's powers are set free. She is very direct, open, sympathetic, compassionate and always intervenes when someone has problems.
  • Ryuga Ko comes from an ancient Chinese family of magician masters whose patron god is a dragon, which is why he is very good at magic. His skills include divination and the use of magic. He and Momoka have known each other for a long time. He annoys her very often, but always helps her out of sticky situations. Even if he is smart and kind, he is very confident of himself.
  • Shunran Ko is Ryuga's half-Chinese cousin and Momoka's best friend. She can also use martial arts. Because she is very intuitive, she lives with the Ko family in Yokohama. Since she can be very easily possessed by ghosts, Momoka and Ryuga take very good care of her. She is scared, but also extremely friendly.
  • Koryu Ko is a cousin of Ryuga. who is from Hong Kong and the eldest son of the main line of the Ko family. He is a very good master of magic and has conjured up a dragon at the age of ten. Since he always gets what he wants, every means is right for him, including violence. That is why he tries to win Momoka and her dragon for himself through unfair means.
  • Raika Ko sometimes behaves like a boy, even if she is a girl. Although she doesn't have a dragon of her own, she can summon a thunder dragon. Because electricity discharges from her body when she is excited, she has not been able to go to school for a long time. Still, she is very intelligent and versatile. So she is very good at playing the piano, martial arts, calligraphy and making sushi. However, she doesn't like to take responsibility for something.
  • Ageha Inui grew up in Yokohama. Since her parents, like Momokas, run a martial arts dojo, she is also good at this area. She is a good friend of Momoka's and a rival for combat. Even if she hates to lose, she doesn't hold grudges. Because she is very determined, she often takes the initiative.
  • Seiryū is the approximately 3000 year old dragon that rode in Momoka. In his human form he has a very impetuous character, even if he seems to have been brought up very well when he first appeared intoxicated by the love potion.

Supporting characters

  • The head of the family is Ryuga's uncle, who has taken on the role of father for him, and comes from China. It is his job to represent the Ko family in Yokohama.
  • Akira Mikado is a master of martial arts and belongs to a family of yin-yang masters , which is why she can also use magic. Their patron god is called the "divine cat general". Even when she is a year younger, she is in love with Ryuga.
  • Toya Shirai comes from the clan of the Black Dragon sect, which is why the Black Dragon is said to take possession of him. To confuse his enemies, he can transform into the female Gennyo Yuten, but he is weaker than Ryuga. He is in love with Momoka, who is one year older than him.
  • RonRon is Momoka's favorite panda. When she was little, Ryuga gave it to her. Once when he fell into the river, Ryuga saved him. Since then, he's been doing mischief with RonRon, which keeps Momoka pissed off.

Manga

St. Dragon Girl was published from October 1999 to March 2003 by Shueisha . The first chapters were published until 2001 in the magazine Ribon Original, the later in the magazine Ribon . From February 2000 to April 2001 the manga appeared in both magazines. The individual chapters later appeared in a total of eight Tankōbon .

An English version was published by Viz Media in the USA. In Germany, the series was published in full by Tokyopop from September 2006 to March 2007, translated by Dagmar Seidel .

The sequel to Saint Dragon Girl Miracle (聖（セ イ ン ト）♡ ド ラ ゴ ン ガ ー ル み ら く る ) appeared in Ribon magazine from June 2003. The series has also been summarized in five edited volumes. From March to November 2008, all volumes were published in German by Tokyopop .

reception

According to Splashcomics' Christiane Korinth, the manga offers an interesting mix of fantasy, martial arts, comedy and romance, as well as lovable characters. The Chinese influences in clothing and the numerous ghosts and dragons give the manga a touch of mysticism. In doing so, however, the pattern of action would often repeat itself. Later, the plot flattens out, but there are also highlights again.
