Chief Spotted Tail invited the Jesuits to the reservation as teachers

St. Francis Mission is a Catholic Church missionary station founded in 1886 in the St. Francis Ward , Todd County , South Dakota . It is the largest non-profit organization on the Rosebud Indian Reservation . According to its own information, she looks after 20,000 Lakota Indians in the reservation area and the surrounding counties. Among other things, the mission station operates the Lakota / English-language radio station KINI 96.1 FM . The Jesuits evangelized in the Lakota area since the 1840s. Br. Peter DeSmet was the first known missionary. In 1877 the Sinte Gleska (Spotted Tail), chief of the Sicangu Lakota , and Red Cloud, chief of the Oglala , asked President Rutherford B. Hayes that Catholic missionaries in "black robes" should take over the education of their children. In 1881 the first Jesuits arrived in St. Francis. The station buildings, which are now listed, were erected by 1886. In contrast to other churches, the missionaries respected the culture and customs of the Lakota Indians and were popular on the reservation. They ran the schools on the reservation, in contrast to other Christian communities who taught the children in boarding schools on behalf of the federal government. In these, the children were alienated from their parents and from their culture. Today the mission station promotes the Lakota language, which is threatened with extinction. In 1974 the missionaries handed over the actual school operations to the reserve administration. However, lessons continue to take place in the mission station buildings. The station also became known as the operator of a pastoral emergency telephone exchange for the 'Suicide and Crisis Hotline' for Indians. In the Rosebud Indian Reservation and the surrounding Pine Ridge and Yankton Reservations , the suicide rate is one of the highest in the United States. In the Pine Ridge Reservation alone, there are 200 suicide or suicide attempts per year.

On June 20, 1975, the St. Francis Mission was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .
