The parish church of St. Gangolf is the Roman Catholic parish church of the Friedrichshafen district of Kluftern .

history

The church was consecrated around 1474. Until the 17th century the church only served a farm as a so-called own church , until Kluftern received its own parish. In the 20th century a new nave was added, which is connected to the old parish church by a wall opening. The new building became necessary because the population of Kluftern had risen steadily in the 20th century and the expansion of the church became more and more urgent. Pastor Dieter Holderried earned decisive merits, who in numerous discussions was able to convince the archdiocese , which at that time had issued a construction freeze for churches, that this new building was unavoidable and achieved that the old church was also renovated.

The old church

The baroque high altar of the church comes from the parish church of St. Maria in Altdorf, which was demolished in 1818 (today Weingarten ) and came to Kluftern in 1883. The rococo pulpit was acquired from the Franciscan convent in Weppach near Bermatingen as early as 1822 .

The four saints erected in the old church by Dominikus Hermenegild Herberger (created around 1750/1755) were originally part of the side altars. The crucifixion group was probably donated in 1648 (it may be individual figures that were later put together as a group). The altar panel of the left side altar is a work by the painter Melchior Paul von Deschwanden from the 19th century.

The organ from 1860 was donated to the community by the Kluftern pastor Baptist Hahn. The ceiling painting from 1905 shows the handover of the keys by Jesus to Peter.

The new Building

The modern new building (1974) has the shape of a tent, which is why it was sometimes called "the tent of God". The interior of the new church is modern. Stone materials and wood predominate.

At the transition to the old parish church there is a late medieval Pietà from the 15th century. The statue of the church patron St. Gangolf is a cast of the Gangolf statue in Neudenau an der Jagst (original from the last third of the 15th century), the crescent moon Madonna is a cast of the Madonna in the Wurmlinger chapel .

The spire

Over the centuries the spire changed with the church. While the spire was strongly onion-shaped around 1780 , from 1926 to 1976 it was more like a triangle. Since 1976 the tower has had an onion-shaped top again.
