St. George's Memorial Church (Ypres)
The St. George's Memorial Church is an Anglican church building in Ypres , West Flanders Province in Belgium . It belongs to the Archdeaconry North-West Europe in the Diocese in Europe of the Church of England .
history
The church was built from 1927 to 1929 to commemorate over 250,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in one of the four battles of Flanders during World War I (1914–1918) .
The building was due to a call by the veterans' association The Ypres League and its chairman Field Marshal Sir John French (1852-1925) to build a British memorial.
The foundation stone was laid on July 24, 1927 by Field Marshal Lord Plumer , architect was Sir Reginald Blomfield . The Bishop of Fulham consecrated the house of God on March 24, 1929.
The church is open daily from 9:30 a.m. until sunset.
