History and description

The St. Jacob's Monument from 1824

As early as 1824, a memorial pillar made of sandstone was erected on St. Jakobsstrasse in Basel to commemorate the Battle of St. Jakob, based on a design by the painter Marquard Wocher . The old St. Jacob's monument was already badly weathered in the middle of the 19th century. In 1859, the Basler Kunstverein held a competition for a new monument, but the result was not clear. Johann Im Hof was the driving force behind the realization of the monument.

As a result, his friend Ferdinand Schlöth in Rome developed the solution that was finally implemented: Helvetia floats on a pedestal and brings the wreath of fame to four dying Swiss, who are grouped around the pedestal. One of the warriors is a self-portrait by Schlöth. The five figures are made of Carrara marble, the cruciform base, not designed by Schlöth, is made of limestone.
