St. Jodokus (Schwäbisch Hall)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Jodokus Chapel (also called Josenkapelle ) was located at 39 Gelbinger Gasse in Schwäbisch Hall .

description

The Jodokus Chapel was built around 1250 when the Gelbinger suburb did not yet exist. The church tower and choir consisted of sandstone humpback blocks with elaborate offset symbols in the corner blocks. This is how Herolt describes it around 1545: the “Sant Josz capell in Gelbinger Gassen was in the forecourt, which at that time was not yet walled” .

After the Reformation , the sacred building was profaned and the church tower was topped up with shell limestone floors around 1570. A half-timbered superstructure was erected on top. It now served as the "Josenturm" and was part of the city wall. Since October 8, 1925, the building has been entered in the state directory of architectural monuments in Württemberg.
